The Badsey Society was launched at a meeting on 28 February 2002 in Badsey Church. Nineteen people attended a lively meeting where the purpose and activities of the Society were discussed. Tony Jerram saw the focus of the Society as the parish and village of Badsey, including Aldington, and the surrounding area. The people, history, archaeology, folklore, flora, fauna and geology of the area were all possible areas of activity, which could take the form of meetings, walking tours, talks, education and publication. He stressed some of the distinctive features of the area which it was important both to celebrate and to document. The villages still had a number of inhabitants whose families had lived in the area for many generations. The formation of the Society was linked to the plan to produce a new and expanded edition of the book ‘A Brief History of Badsey and Aldington’. Terry Sparrow, one of the original joint authors, was currently rewriting the book with the support of a number of people in the village. A public meeting about the book had been held in September 2001, and since then, about twenty people had lent old photographs and other materials for the book. The Countryside Service of Worcestershire County Council has kindly offered a grant towards the cost of publishing the book. The Badsey Society was seen as a suitable body to administer this grant. In a lively discussion that followed, Chris Allen praised the Badsey website and raised the possibility of greater use of electronic information within the villages. Richard Phillips said that income from the sale of the book should provide an income to fund other activities. A number of speakers welcomed the proposals and suggested areas of interest for the Society. Ivor Martin spoke about the historical importance of market gardening and the Badsey Flower Show. Peter Stewart mentioned the growing interest in genealogy and Lizzie Noyes suggested the documentation of people living in the village today. Fiona Allen proposed that a competition should be run to choose a logo for the Society.
